Venice Tips & Advices

TRANSPORT

In der Altstadt gehts fast nur zu Fuß. Man sollte sich auf jeden Fall eine Karte besorgen, ich habe die 'Navigator' App die ich wirklich empfehlen kann und die wir täglich benutzt haben. Da sie das Kartenmaterial herunterläd braucht man eben kein Internet was im Ausland natürlich doppelt praktisch ist.

Dazu gibts noch das Vaporetto als Alternative, es gibt am Canal Grande unzählige Stationen und man kann damit auch raus auf die anderen Inseln fahren. Ich würde auf jeden Fall empfehlen ein Ticket für mehrere Tage zu kaufen da Einzelfahrten vergleichsweise extrem teuer sind. WICHTIG: Es gibt nur ein ermäßigtes Ticket für 3 Tage welches für junge Leute unter 25 Jahren gedacht ist. Das kostet um die 22€ und man muss nur seinen Ausweis vorlegen und bei sich haben wegen der Alterskontrolle.

Walking in Venice is the best thing. You should definitly buy a map, I use the app 'Navigator' which is the perfect map app I think. We used it several times a day and it's quite useful because it's an offline navigator, it downloads the maps so you don't need internet. 

Next to that Vaporetto is another way to get from A to B. There are a lot of stations along Canal Grande and you can get to the islands easily. I recommend to get a ticket for a few days because single ride tickets are comparatively expensive. IMPORTANT: There is just one ticket with a discount for three days which is for young people under 25 years. It's about 22€ and you just have to show and carry your passport with you in case of control.

 

RESTAURANTS & CAFES

In Italien geht natürlich nichts ohne Eis! Nahe der Rialtobrücke gibt es die Gelateria White die wirklich unglaublich ist! Man kann sein Eis selbst mit allem möglichen verzieren und es gibt viele verschiedene Sorten.

Nahe des Campo Santo Stephano liegt das Fuori Menu. Meiner Meinung nach einer der tollsten Läden den es gibt, man bekommt dort Torten, Pralinen, Macarons etc aber auch unzählige Sorten von Keksen, normale Backwaren, belegte Croissants usw. Vor allem finde ich sind die Macarons dort fast die besten die ich je gegessen habe. Auf jeden Fall einen Besuch wert!

Zu Restaurants gibts keinen konkreten Tipp, überall findet man schöne, kleine Restaurants und man hat wirklich die Qual der Wahl. Wenn man essen gehen möchte einfach ein bisschen umher laufen und man entdeckt schon einige von denen man sich dann für eins entscheiden kann.
Cafes hat es in Venedig auch sehr viele, am Markusplatz liegt das Caffe Florian welches eines der ältesten ist schon fast historisch. Das Ambiente ist wundervoll, allerdings sind die Preise auch sehr saftig, muss man sich überlegen ob es das Wert ist. An der 'Riva degli Schiavoni' (das Ufer ab dem Markusplatz) sind unzählige Cafes und Restaurants mit Blick auf San Giorgio Maggiore und Giudecca (wie auf dem Bild mit den Weingläsern).

When in Italy ice cream is a must! Near Rialto bridge is Gelateria White which is so incredible! They have so many toppings for your ice cream and the offer many different flavors.

Near Campo Santo Stephano is Fuori Menu. In my opinion one of the most amazing stores ever. You can get there cakes, chocolates, macarons, cookies, normal bakery stuff, panini,...just everything! Especially the macarons are some of the best ones I ever ate.

About restaurants: There are so so many with delicious things so my advice is just looking around the place where you are and you'll have the choice between a few ones after a couple of minutes.

In Venice are also a lot of Cafes, at Piazza San Marco is Caffe Florian which is one of the oldest and really historic. The interior is so beautiful (venezian) and there is also live music. But: the prices are really hefty so you have to think about if it's worth it. Further, along Riva degli Schiavoni (shore from San Marco to the east) are so many Cafes and Restaurants with a great view on San giorgio Maggiore and Giudecca (picture with wine glasses).

 

SIGHTS

In dem Fall ist die Stadt an sich natürlich schon die Hauptattraktion. Es gibt unzählige toller Brücken, Kanälen, Kirchen usw. Falls ihr euch das oben erwähnte Ticket holt fahrt auf jeden Fall raus zu den Inseln wie Burano, Murano oder auf Giudecca. Gegenüber des Markusplatzes liegt San Giorgio Maggiore mit der gleichnamigen Kirche von Palladio die wunderschön ist, ein Besuch lohnt sich auf jeden Fall.

In this case the city itself is the No 1 sight! There are so many beautiful places, bridges, churches, canals... If you decide to get the ticket I talked about above take a ride to the islands like Burano, Murano or Giudecca. Across from San Marco is San Giorgio Maggiore with the church by Palladio with the same name. It's so incredible beautiful and my all time favorite church!

SHOPPING

Zwischen der Rialtobrücke und dem Markusplatz gibt es die meisten Shops. Sehr viele teure Geschäfte aber auch 'normale'. Meiner Meinung nach sollte man sich in Venedig nicht auf XXL Shopping einstellen denn das ist dort nicht möglich, von den 'normalen' Läden gibts nur ein paar und die sind auch eher klein. Unter anderem gibt es auch einen Sephora dort falls es jemanden interessiert :)

In the area between Rialto bridge and San Marco are the most shops. Many expensive ones but also some of the 'normal' ones. In my opinion you shouldn't go to Venice for serious shopping because that's not possible. There are just a few of the 'normal' stores and these are mostly small. Further you can find a Sephore there if someone is interested in :)

SPECIAL TIP

Überall und zu jeder Jahreszeit sind in Venedig sehr viele Touristen. Ich persönlich finde den Bereich um die 'Ponte dell' Accademia' am schönsten, eben auch weil dort nicht so viele Touristen sind. Gleich nach der Brücke in San Marco liegt der Campo Santo Stephano in dessen Nähe das oben erwähnte 'Fuori Menu' liegt. Auf diesem Platz kann man schön sitzen und die Sonne genießen. Kurz danach Richtung Markusplatz ist das Museo della Musica in einer alten Kirche. Dort ist eine Ausstellung mit alten Instrumenten. Das hört sich nicht so spannend an ist aber super interessant und wirklich empfehlenswert mal reinzuschauen, ist nicht groß und der Eintritt ist frei!

In Venice are always many tourists. I personally like the area around 'Ponte dell' Accademia' because there are not so many tourists. Next to the bridge in San Marco is Campo Santo Stephano which I mentioned above. This place is so nice to sit there and watching people walking around or to enjoy the sun. Not far away in the direction of San Marco is Museo della Musica in an sold church. There is an exhebition of old musical instruments, it sounds not that exciting but it really is and I absolutly recommend to take 15min to get inside, it's not big and it's for free!

Vienna Tips & Advices

Wie angekündigt gibt es hier einen kleinen Post mit einigen Tipps für alle die mal nach Wien gehen wollen. Im letzten Post habe ich ja schon gesagt, dass ich Wien einfach so unglaublich schön finde und dass es meiner Meinung nach total unterschätzt wird, vor allem im deutschsprachigen Raum ist es bei den meisten einfach 'nur' die Hauptstadt Österreichs. Eine Reise ist es aber sowas von wert und dazu gibts jetzt von mir einige Tipps und Ratschläge:

Here is the promised post with some Vienna tips for everyone who wants to go there. Like I told you, Vienna is so beautiful and I absolutly love it. Maybe think about planning your next city trip to Vienna, it's totally worth it! So here are a few tips and advices:

 TRANSPORT

Für die U-Bahn und die Straßenbahn gibt es 24/48/72-Stunden Tickets. Wir hatten das für 72hr für 16,70€ und es lohnt sich total, eine einfache Fahrt kostet 2,20€ (die Preise für die anderen Tickets findet ihr vorab auf der Webseite) und man kommt damit zu Schloss Schönbrunn, zur Donau und Prater oder zum Bahnhof (was für uns wichtig war da wir mit dem Zug an- und abgereist sind). Außerdem ist es sehr praktisch wenn es regnet, man kann dann z.B. auch die Linie 1 nehmen (Straßenbahn) und eine kleine Sightseeing Tour machen da sie im Zentrum an allen Highlights vorbei fährt.

You can get a 24/48/72hr ticket for the Subway and the Tram. We got the 72hr ticket for 16,70€ but you can see all prices on their website. It's totally worth it, for a single ride you pay 2,20€. You can use the Subway to get to Schloss Schönbrunn or to the Donau and Prater. Also to reach the train station which was important for us because we came and left with the train. The Tram network in Vienna was one of the first in the whole world and when you don't want to walk anymore or it's rainy you can take line 1 and you'll come along all important and historic buildings like the Opera house or the Parliament.

RESTAURANTS & CAFES

Im Zentrum gibt es sehr viele Restaurants, wir haben die traditionellen mit deftigeren Sachen gemieden da wir es nicht so mögen und die österreichische Küche hat auch nicht viel Unterscheid zu dem was wir hier zuhause essen. Wenn ihr was internationaleres sucht geht zum Naschmarkt. Das ist ein riesiger Markt wo man alles kriegt wovon man träumt. Es sind auch einige kleine Restaurants wenn man keine Möglichkeit hat zu kochen aber man kann auch Sachen für ein Picknick kaufen wie wir es gemacht haben, es gibt da wirklich alles. Die Restaurants sind auch eher internationaler, probiert unbedingt Neni. Es ist einfach so so lecker (das Burger Bild oben), man darf sich das echt nicht entgehen lassen.
Zu Cafes muss ich glaube ich nicht viel sagen, gibt es in Wien an jeder Ecke und so ist wirklich für jeden Geschmack was dabei. Ich würde empfehlen wenn man Lust auf einen Kaffeehausbesuch hat, einfach ein bisschen rum laufen und man wird schon einige entdecken zwischen denen man sich dann entscheiden kann. Empfehlen kann ich aber Cafe Votiv (an der Universität) wo man vor allem auf Studenten trifft, man hat dort einfach einen schönen Blick auf die Votivkirche und den Park und man kann da toll frühstücken gehen. Als anderen Frühstückstipp noch das Figar und das Kussmaul, auch wirklich traumhaft. Liegt im Museumsquartier und es gibt da auch noch eine Bar und eine Patisserie. Patisserien allgemein gibt es auch überall, ich fand Gerstner K&K echt super, die Cupcakes sind einfach göttlich!

There are a lot of restaurants in the city centre. We avoided the ones with traditional austrian food because we personally don't really like (there is actually no big difference between austrian and south german/bavarian food). If you are searching for international food go to Naschmarkt. It's a big market where you can get everything you are dreaming of. There are also many small restaurants if you don't have the possibility to cook but you can also buy things for a picnic like we did, you can get there whatever you want. The restaurants also offer more international things and we only tried one called 'Neni' and it was heaven (the burger pic above)! And since you can find this one just in Vienna, Zurich and Berlin go there and try it.
Cafes are not very hard, there is almost one around every corner so when you decide to go there just walk around for 5 minutes and you'll come across some cafes you can now choose between. I liked Cafe Votiv (mainly students, next to the university) which has a great view to the church Votiv and the park. The breakfast there is great, also Figar and Kussmaul do have amazing breakfasts. Kussmaul also has a Patisserie, you can find ones easily, there are a lot of them and I personally liked Gerstner K&K, the cupcakes are ah-mazing.

SIGHTS

Die meisten Sehensürdigkeiten liegen in der Stadtmitte und sind einfach zu Fuß erreichbar. Der Stephansdom ist da natürlich ein Muss, außerdem gibt es jeden Tag Gottesdienste (18 Uhr und 19Uhr). Als nächstes natürlich Schloss Schönbrunn, leicht mit der U-Bahn zu erreichen. Es gibt verschiedene Führungen (mit Studentenausweis Rabatt!) und man hat auch die Möglichkeit die wunderschönen Parkanlagen anzuschauen. In der Innenstadt wieder gibt es die Ringstraße bestehend aus Universitätsring, Burgring, Opernring und noch ein paar anderen. Wie die Namen schon sagen liegen daran unter anderem die Oper, die Universität und das Burgtheater. Außerdem das Parlament, das Museumsquartier, der Volksgarten und das Rathaus. Von dort kommt man auch sehr leicht zum Naschmarkt den ich oben ja schon erwähnt habe. In Wien gibt es eine Menge architektonischer Highlights, wie z.B. sehr viele Gebäude von Otto Wagner aber dazu sucht ihr euch am besten selbst raus was euch interessiert.

Most of the sights are near the city center and easily to reach by walking. Stephansdom is a must, there are daily services at 6pm and 7pm. Next Schloss Schönbrunn of course, you can reach it with the subway. There are different tours through the palace (also in english!) and you have the possibility to spend time in the beautiful gardens around. Back to the city center, visit the Ringstraße. There are all these historic important buildings around like the opera house, parliament, city hall, Burgtheater and the Museumsquartier with many museums. From there you can reach the Naschmarkt in a few minutes. In Vienna are also many architectonic highlights like a lot of buildings by Otto Wagner, but I recommend to pick the ones you are interested in by yourself.

 SHOPPING

Im Zentrum um den Stephansplatz herum gibt es wirklich unzählige Shops. Ich würde sagen es gibt vier große Einkaufsstraßen, die Mariahilferstraße, die Kärntnerstraße, der Kohlmarkt und der Graben. Es ist alles vertreten, H&M, Zara, Brandy Melville und Forever21 bis zu den absoluten Luxuslabels findet ihr dort alles.

In the center around the Stephansplatz are so so many shops. There are four big shopping streets, Mariahilferstraße, Kärntnerstraße, Kohlmarkt and Graben. You can find there everything, from H&M, Zara, Brandy Melville and Forever21 to the luxury stores.

 SPECIAL TIP

Wenn man in Wien ist, ist es eigentlich ein 'Muss' in die Oper oder ins Theater zu gehen. 

Oper: Das ist natürlich die Wiener Staatsoper die man ja auch kennt, klar sind die Karten nicht ganz so günstig aber es ist wirklich ein Erlebnis und ich kann es nur empfehlen.

Theater: Das Burgtheater ist eins der wichtigsten in ganz Europa. Die Karten sind echt günstig weil irgendwas um die 80% vom Staat bezahlt werden (immer noch ein Gesetz aus Kaiser Zeiten). Darum kosten sie nur zwischen 2,50€ (Stehplatz) und 59€ für das Parkett.

Es gibt täglich Führungen durchs Burgtheater für ein paar Euro die wirklich interessant sind. Es gibt viele Infos über das Gebäude und die Geschichte des Theaters (sehr gut wenn es regnet).

When in Vienna it's a must to visit the Opera or the Theater. Opera: It's the 'Wiener Staatsoper', you can get tickets online, of course these are not so cheap but it's a real experience. Theater: It's the 'Burgtheater' and it's one of the most important theaters in whole Europe. The tickets are quite cheap because something like 80% is still payed by the state (a law from a former Kaiser). So the price is between 2,50€ (but you have to stand) and 59€ for the best seats.

There are daily tours through the 'Burgtheater' for a few euros which are super interesting, they tell you a lot about the building and its history and about the theater itself of course (also perfect for a rainy day).
